Welcome to the General Register Office for England and Wales online ordering service

The General Register Office holds a central copy of all registrations for England and Wales. Local Register Offices also hold records of events registered in their area.

For recent events registered within the last 18 months, applications for certificates should be made to the Register Office in the district where the birth, death or marriage took place.

Service Announcement - Friday, 2 May

The General Register Office are currently experiencing high levels of requests for certificates. Whilst the vast majority of certificates are being despatched on time a small percentage of certificates may be subject to delay.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused and anticipate that full service will be resumed by week commencing 12 May.

Please note that our Priority Service is not affected and all priority orders are continuing to be despatched on time.

From 1 April 2008, the General Register Office became part of the Identity and Passport Service. Please note when purchasing certificates online using a credit/debit card, the transaction will be shown as “Identity and Passport Service” on your bank statement.



- What you will need -

  • One of the following valid credit or debit cards
    maestroVisaMastercardDeltaSolovisa-electron
  • Full name and postal address
  • An e-mail address
  • Details of the registration event you are applying for - e.g. birth, death, marriage or adoption

If you are using the site for the first time you will need to complete the registration process. You will only need to go through this process the first time you use the system.
