Birth, marriage, civil partnership and death certificates

This section gives you information on how much it costs to order birth, marriage or death certificates. To find out about the different ways to apply and pay, see How to apply and pay.

Please note that only with birth certificates do you have the option to order a short certificate. Full certificates are often required for legal purposes.

A civil partnership is available as a certified extract, which does not include the addresses of the civil partners.

What is a GRO Index reference?
The index reference number is the code we allocate to every birth, marriage or death registered in England and Wales - it relates to the year, quarter, district, volume and page number.

For civil partnerships in England and Wales - it relates to the formation authority and entry number.

For an overseas civil partnership - the reference relates to the Post name, type and page number.

The lower fees only apply where the exact GRO Index reference is supplied.
