Welcome to the General Register Office for England and Wales online ordering service.

The General Register Office holds a central copy of all birth, adoption, marriage, civil partnership and death registrations for England and Wales. This service allows you to search our historical birth and death indexes and order copies of registrations in a variety of formats including certificates, PDFs and Online View digital images via the government's own official website.

Local Register Offices also hold records of events registered in their area. For births and deaths that were registered within the last 6 months, applications for certificates should be made to the Register Office in the district where the birth or death took place.

Details of the registration you are applying for - e.g. birth, adoption, marriage, civil partnership or death

Certificate orders to support a British passport application

If ordering a certificate to support a British passport application, the General Register Office can send this directly to His Majesty’s Passport Office.

To do this, when asked for the address you want the certificate sent to, you must provide the application reference number (usually beginning PEX) followed by the full postal address exactly as provided by HM Passport Office.

HM Passport Office will link the certificate to your passport application using the application reference number, so please ensure that this is provided accurately. It may take several days for your passport application to be updated following HM Passport Office receiving the certificate (typically within three working days of receipt).
