Customers with disabilities

The General Register Office is committed to providing fair and accessible services for all our customers.

This section explains the services and facilities we offer for customers with disabilities.

Deaf or hard of hearing

  • Text Relay connects people using a textphone (sometimes called a Minicom) with people using a telephone or another textphone. It lets deaf, hard of hearing and speech impaired people stay in touch with friends and family, and call businesses over the telephone.
  • To contact the General Register office using the Text Relay service text: 18001 (followed by) 0300 123 1837. This service is available 8am to 8pm Monday to Friday. Saturday 9am to 4pm).
  • Please note that calls may be recorded for training and monitoring purposes.

Blind or partially sighted

This website meets government accessibility guidelines and is suitable for use with a screen reader but if you need to change text and colours in your browser you can do so by following the instructions below.

  • Changing text and colours in your browser

    • you can choose how Microsoft Internet Explorer and Netscape Navigator display the text size, text and link colours on the website
    • below are detailed guidelines for changing text size and colours for different types of browser
    • a quick way to change text size in Microsoft Internet Explorer is to to ‘View’ in the top menu bar, then ‘Text Size’ and choose your desired font size.
    • in Netscape, the quick way to change text size is to go to ‘View’ in the top menu bar, then ‘Text Zoom’ and choose the zoom value for the text

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer for PC

      1. open your Internet Explorer Web Browser
      2. select 'Tools' from the menu at the top of your window
      3. from the options which appear, select 'Internet options'
      4. click on the 'General' tab
      5. click on the button marked 'Accessibility'
      6. to change your font size, select the checkbox marked 'Ignore font sizes specified on Web pages'
      7. to remove background and font colours, select the checkbox marked 'Ignore colours specified on web pages'
      8. click OK (and again if necessary)
      9. select 'View' from the menu at the top of your window
      10. from the options which appear, select 'Text Size'
      11. select your desired text size

    • Microsoft Internet Explorer for Apple Macintosh

      1. open your Internet Explorer Web Browser
      2. select the 'edit' menu at the top of your window
      3. from the options menu that appears, select 'preferences'
      4. click on 'web content'
      5. deselect the button marked 'show style sheets'
      6. return to the list of preferences
      7. click on 'web browser'
      8. select 'language/fonts'
      9. select the font size you require

    • Instructions for users of Netscape Navigator

      Text:
      1. select 'Edit' from the menu at the top of the window and choose 'Preferences'
      2. open the 'Appearance' group and click the 'Fonts' category
      3. next to 'For the encoding' should read Western to tell the computer which types of letters and symbols to use From 'Size' select 18, or another desired font size
      4. next to the Variable Width Font, or serif field is a drop down box: select 'Arial' or another desired font. The Fixed Width, or monospace, Font box should already read 'Courier New'. From 'Size' select 18, or another desired font size

      Colours:
      1. select 'Edit' from the menu at the top of the window and choose 'Preferences'
      2. open the 'Appearance' group and click the 'Colors' category
      3. you can choose you own set of 'Text and Background' and 'Link Colors' on the right hand side
      4. these colours can be used instead of the colours set by any web page, by checking 'Use my colors' option

  • Orders for certificates can be made by telephone on + 44(0)300 123 1837. A member of staff will complete an online form for you over the telephone and take payment using a credit or debit card.
  • Information contained in a birth, death, marriage, civil partnership, still-birth or adoption entry can be provided in Braille. Any request for a Braille translation should be made at the time of ordering and will extend the despatch period by an additional 5 working days.
  • Large print versions of our printed literature are available on request.

Wheelchair user

  • The General Register Office is located at Southport, Merseyside. We do not provide over-the-counter certificate ordering or research facilities. However, if you wish to speak to a member of staff in person, our office has designated parking bays, wheelchair access and toilet facilities for disabled customers.
